Soldier On!

Walk in the steps of a civil war soldier through the battlefield and see the Anderson House that served as a hospital. There is no better way to learn history than to see it come alive, people of all ages will be captivated by the dramatic stories of life and death during the Battle of the Hemp Bales. While you’re there, enjoy a family picnic on the lawn.


Be sure to attend this year's Battle of the Hemp Bales Reenactment, October 28th and 29th, 2018. This two-day event features different exciting skirmishes each day, live mortar fire and character portrayals, demonstrations and many more living history activities sure to leave an impression that lasts a lifetime.

Discover Our Fresh Air!

Fun in the fresh air has never been more important for kids, and Lexington’s stunning countryside will leave the whole family wanting more. Come to family-friendly events hosted at the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site, such as learning how to grow food for pollinators or how to cook in a dutch oven just like the pioneers. Dress up and feel proper at their annual Afternoon Tea event in the spring! Practice those new skills at Big River Ranch and camp under the starry sky or a horseback ride by the river, the possibilities are as endless as the fresh air we want to share with your family.

Let's Get Growing

Celebrate the growing season with us while discovering our trove of historical treasures. Porches & Peaches in the summer will entertain the whole family with musical performances, stories of the past on the porches of historic homes and homemade peach treats, of course! The Old West Octoberfest in the fall is a delight with activities for all ages celebrating the fusion of the Santa Fe Trail into our annual apple harvest.

Lexington is home to amazing countryside and we love kids to see life on the farm – and taste it! Head out into the patches or orchards to bring home our local produce of the season or catch the spirit of harvest and pick-your-own, from strawberries, blackberries and raspberries in the summer to pumpkins in the fall. Making fresh family memories never tasted so good!

Ghost Stories!

Travel back in time with a guided tour through Machpelah Cemetery with live character portrayals of people buried within the cemetery. Hear their dramatic stories of life in the civil war era. Hosted once yearly in the fall, this non-scary event will amaze kids and keep them talking about the people who rose from the dead to tell their side of the story!

Lock 'em Up!

Bring their imagination to life, your kids will delight in being locked up in a jail cell meant for the real outlaws of the wild, wild west that frequented the streets and saloons of Lexington. Located at the Lexington Historical Museum, a captivating collection of memorabilia related to the Pony Express mail service, steamboats, coal mining, Osage Indians, and the Wentworth Military Academy.
