HIGHLAND AVENUE HISTORIC DISTRICT – This scenic street runs along the bluff above the Missouri River and was once part of the Santa Fe Trail. More than 25 homes built in the mid- to late-1800s are in the district. The Aull family built many of the homes, including the Elizabeth Aull Seminary. Don’t miss the Missouri River overlook provided by the Lafayette County War Memorial.

Shopkeepers and offices still do business in the same buildings where the early citizens of Lexington worked and shopped. Many of the buildings now contain antique and gift shops, each one with its own personality. Visit the shops and enjoy the period renovation that showcases each building.

WENTWORTH MILITARY ACADEMY HISTORIC DISTRICT

Founded in 1880, Wentworth is one of nation's oldest and most respected military schools. It offers high school and college degrees. A military history museum and Vietnam War Memorial are on the campus. Tours are available by appointment.


OLD NEIGHBORHOODS HISTORIC DISTRICT – Main Street, Franklin Avenue and South Street from 13th to 20th Street comprise the District. These streets are lined with antebellum (pre-Civil War) homes dating from the 1830s, Victorian, classic revival and homes in other styles. Enjoy the historic architecture on these tree-lined streets where covered wagons and carriages traveled long ago. Included in this area are some wonderful homes that are now bed and breakfast inns.
