Timeless. Extraordinary. Legendary.
Established in 1822, by the 1830s Lexington was one of the largest and most important towns west of St. Louis. This bustling trade center served as an outfitting post for the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails. Factories, warehouses, mills and stores lined the riverfront, which had docks for many steamboats. The headquarters for the westward freighting firm that founded the Pony Express was located in Lexington, as was the first Masonic College. Lexington is perhaps best known for the three-day Civil War battle, the “Battle of the Hemp Bales." Today visitors can stroll down streets where wagon trains once rolled and shop in buildings dating back to the 1840s. Many of these buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We invite you to explore area attractions in Lexington and throughout Lafayette County to learn more.
