Runner/Walkers!  Time to Gear Up for the 4th Annual Fritz Begemann Memorial 5K Run/Walk

Would you like to take a stroll along a lake side and through a park-like setting, or is competing for first place among your peers more your style?  You can do either one and raise money for a good cause at the annual Lexington Community Fair at the same time!

The 4th Annual Fritz Begemann Memorial 5KRun/Walk will take place on Saturday, August 18, 2018.  Registration will begin at 7:15 a.m. at the Lexington, MO Ball Park Complex.  The race will start at 8 a.m.  The registration/donation fee is $25.00 per person.  Pre-register before Friday, August 8th and receive a Free T-Shirt.  A limited number of T-shirts will be available to purchase the day of the 5KRun/Walk.

Alvin Fredrick “Fritz” Begemann had a genuine love for AMERICA’S FAVORITE PAST TIME, and was passionate in coaching and seeing young athletes play the games of baseball and softball.  Throughout the 1990’s and early 2000’s, Fritz helped coach hundreds of kids in Lexington, and other local towns, how to play the game and compete with passion, both on and off the field.

Fritz passed away suddenly on May 3, 2014 and left behind a generation of athletes that may forever remember his quips and quotes.

The Fritz Begemann Memorial exists to help support the Lexington Little League and all the future young athletes in the community.  Because of your community support, the memorial has donated over $5,000 in baseball and softball equipment, including new bats, catchers gear, new magnetic breakaway bases, 10 dozen baseballs and 10 dozen softballs, all tournament approved.  Additionally, the Lexington Little League was able to purchase a new pitching machine, and generously donated it to the Lexington Parks and Rec.

Additional funds are also available for any child/young athlete in need of assistance.  Donations are accepted year round; tax ID info will be provided upon request.

CAR TRUCK AND MOTORCYCLE SHOW

2018 Lexington Community Fair Car/Truck/Motorcycle Show

Hosted by Twisted Suspension

Get ready for our 5th year hosting this show.  And as every year since our first show, it’s growing!

With all of the high quality entries last year, we expect this year to be even tougher on our judges.  One thing is for sure though, EVERYONE (judges, spectators, kids, even other people entered in the same class!) Enjoyed what they saw.  And what everyone saw was a lot!  There was everything from original unrestored mint condition cars, to extreme muscle cars, from completely custom trucks to exotic imports.  There definitely was something for everyone, and we anticipate the same this year.

A little about the show this year.  We are offering 13 classes and 7 additional specialty awards (including our officer voted, “most likely to get pulled over” award).  This makes for a hard day of judging for our out-of-town judges so please be nice to them.

All of our entries will be entered into a drawing or door prizes, along with goody bags for the first 50 to enter.  There will be a gun raffle hosted by Bakers armory, they are donating a pair of his-and-hers handguns to the winner this year.  And as always a 50/50 raffle to boot.

We pride ourselves on honest judging, so our judges come from all over, not knowing each other, or the cars they are judging, simply to be as fair and consistent as possible.  We also welcome everyone to enter, whether it’s your first time showing, or you are a seasoned vet.  We all appreciate the rides, and the road to where they are now.  All the hours we put in to get the smallest of details right.

If you have made it before in the past, be sure to spread the word on how good of a time you had, how great the atmosphere was, and awesome the people are.  We look forward to seeing you again, and all of the first-time attendees as well.

Dan Cowell is a former zookeeper with the Kansas City Zoo.  After seeing the interest-for-conservation and animal education from students, Animal Wonders was born.  The educators of this organization do not condone ownership.  They also do not approve use of or will ever expose children to wild dogs, great apes, large snakes, or any other potentially dangerous animal.  Their animals are for educational purposes.  They are not circus acts or performers.  Animal Wonders staff strive for as natural behavior as possible for a captive wild species.

Nearly all of the animals are rescues or surrenders and they depend on donations to support the programs offered.

Please don’t miss this unique experience at the Lexington Community Fair.  The animal interaction will take place on Saturday at the fair between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m.

Parade 2018 “HOW TIME FLIES”!!!!!

The Lexington Community Fair Parade is slated for Saturday August 18th –the final day of the seven-day festival.  Headlining this year’s Lexington Community Fair Parade as Grand Marshalls are Clyde and Sharon Charles.

Since its inception the parade has attracted numerous creative floats and this year will once again boast the crazy antics of the crowd-pleasing Ararat Shriners of Kansas City, with their array of clowns, tiny cars, motorcycles and classic cars.

Several Lexington High School classes holding reunions that week are also expected to join the parade, say organizers.

This year’s parade promises to be equally entertaining for the large crowd expected to line the parade route.  The parade theme of “How Time Flies” should only add to the fun.  Design your entries to express your personality, your business, or just come up with something wacky.  We want to see who YOU are Lexington!  Here is your chance.  There will be no judging.  This is a just for FUN parade.  All participants are encouraged to attend for the fun and enthusiasm of the crowd.  So come on out, throw some candy to all the kids, young and old, have a good time, and see HOW TIME FLIES!  In Lexington’s Annual Community Fair Parade.  The Lexington Police department asks parade participants to be considerate of other parade participants as well as onlookers by not displaying dangerous behavior.  Burn-Outs.   Wheelies or Smoke Outs are not acceptable behavior.  Opening of headers is acceptable and motorcycle riders may ride in the parade without a helmet.  For additional parade information call Liz Fenner at (660) 259-2187 or (660) 232-4481.

Check-in for the parade will begin at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Broadway and Highland Avenue (Across the street from the Madonna of the Trail Statue).  The parade will begin at 11:00 a.m. taking off at 8th Street (In front of the Elk’s Lodge) heading east on Main Street before disbanding at 15th Street.  Kiddie Parade entries will line up in the parking lot between 9th and 10th Streets.  Due to the logistics in the parade staging area organizers ask if your entry contains more than one unit to meet elsewhere and check in together as a group.  This area will not allow for holding spots or rearranging entries.

“Kiss the Pig” Entrants Set to Pucker Up

This year’s group of potential pig-smoochers has been selected for the 8th Annual Lexington Community Fair “Kiss the Pig Contest” and they are now ready to raise money for the annual summer festival and their favorite charity.  The participant who raises the most amount of money over the course of the contest will have the “privilege” of puckering up and kissing a real live pig.  The fundraiser is all in good fun.

Six local “Celebrities” have graciously volunteered or should we say have been “hog tied” and are lobbying for votes to keep from being the candidate to lock lips with a swine.  The efforts of these men and women will be rewarded with 50% of their “bacon” raised being donated to their favorite local charity.

Candidates include:

     Christy Thorp Lexington Historical Association

Sarrah Morgan C.A.R.  (Cancer Assistance Relief)

Jonathan Morris LYWC Lexington Youth Wrestling Club

Rhonda Simnitt Lexington R-5 Special Olympics

Brittany Register Family of Angela and Aaron Dunn

Bob Florence  Lafayette County Enterprises Inc.

     Tami Worthington The “LEX”

Chelsea Huffman Ministerial Alliance Angel Tree Program

To help one of these lucky contestants in their quest to keep from cozying up to some swine, cans will be placed at Dave’s Country Market from July 27th to August 15th  for you to vote for the contestant of your choice.  Vote early, vote often.  Contestants will also have their very own voting container in their possession or at their place of business for you to place votes.

The contest will close at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15th.  The loser of the contest will be announced in front of the courthouse and the official “lip lock” will take place immediately following the parade on Saturday, August 18th.  A special prize will be awarded to the candidate that raises the most money.

The Lexington Community Fair Board would like to thank Dave’s Country Market for hosting the voting.

“TRY TO STAY DRY”---BEACH TOWEL VOLLEYBALL

Ever had a warm summer day and looking for a great game for you, your family or friends?  Look no further….this game is sure to be a hit!  Like traditional volleyball with a fun new spin!

A hot day + a bunch of people + balloons + water + towels = WATER BALLOON VOLLEYBALL!!!!!

This fun-filled Lexington Community Fair activity will take place at Main Street Park located at 12th and Main Street in downtown Lexington on Saturday, August 18th starting at 1:30 p.m.

This game follows the rules of traditional volleyball, except that instead of a volleyball, and instead of your hands you will be using a water balloon and a beach towel.  Volleying will ensue when each team can each effectively use a towel and teamwork to toss and catch a water balloon over a volleyball net.

DESCRIPTION:

Form 2 teams.  Have each team stand on either side of the volleyball net.  Have each team divide into pairs.  Each pair should have one towel and each person should grab 2 corners of the towel so that it is spread out between the pair.

A water balloon is placed on the towel of one of the pairs.  The pair must then work together to lift their towel so that the balloon is propelled into the air, across the net to the other team.  One of the pairs on the other team must then try to catch the balloon with their towel and return it the same way.

As in regular volleyball, a team scores a point when the balloon hits the ground on the other side of the net.

OBJECTIVE:

Like Volleyball, the object is to score the most points and get the other team wet at the same time.

GO QUACKERS at the ELK’S #749 5th Annual Duck Dash

Downtown Lexington will be buzzing on Saturday, August 18th.  But on Saturday, it will also be quacking as well.

That’s the day that the Elk’s swimming pool will gleam bright yellow with hundreds of rubber ducks, each one primed to float to the finish line. The 2018 Elks Lodge #749 Duck Derby has become a popular downtown tradition in recent years, and it is making its second appearance on the Schedule of Events at the 2018 Lexington Community Fair.

Sponsored and hosted by the local lodge, the duck race raises money for the lodge’s local and international charities.

Racers will once again have the opportunity to win a first place prize of $300.  You need not be present to win.  This event is free to watch and open to the public.  All ducks remain the property of the Lexington Elks.

So it’s time to get your ducks in a row!!! Teams or individuals can adopt a duck for $5, or a “quack pack” 6 ducks for $25, or a “quack attack pack” 13 ducks for $50. The race will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 18th at the local Elks swimming pool located at 801 Main Street, when all “adoptive parents” will have a chance to go for the gold.

Food and drink will be available for purchase.  After the “Duck Dash” is concluded, be sure to hang around the pool area for the 3rd annual Elks’ Lodge #749 Cardboard Boat Races.

For more information regarding the race or how to purchase a duck, please contact Race Co-Chairman Kathy Hoeppner at (660) 232-2014 or Christy Thorp at (816) 838-2550

SINK OR SAIL AT THE ANNUAL ELKS #749 Cardboard Boat Races

So sailors, boat-builders, engineers and fans of boat racing, “GET READY”, Put on your captain’s hat and bring along your first mate and enter the 3rd annual Elks #749 Cardboard Boat Races at 801 Main Street on Saturday, August 18th at 2:30 p.m. immediately following the Elks #749 annual Duck Dash that will take place at 2:00 P.M.

Boats can be made of only corrugated cardboard, duct tape and one layer of polyurethane.  Each contestant must have an original name for their boat.  Designs can be anything from a pirate ship to a shark, to just a plain old boat.  Creativity is encouraged when it comes to designing, as long as it does not help with the floatation of the boat.  They say duct tape can fix anything, and for the crafty and innovative contestants at the Elks #749 Cardboard Boat Races, this is probably what will keep them afloat.

Awards will be given in the following categories

1st place  (2 adults)

1st place  (1 adult and child)

1st place (2 children)

Captain’s Award (Judges Choice of Best Overall Design)

Titanic Award (Award of the Greatest Sinking)
